Looking South from the edge of Black Rocks in Marquette's Presque Isle (the frozen edge of Lake Superior)... I typically prefer horizontally framed shots, but a vertical framing allowed for more of the "pancake ice" in the foreground. While the camera is at eye level here, I'm standing about 30 feet up from the actual water line, on the edge of the rocks - this kind of plays with the sense of distance and size a bit I think.
Here's the horizontal framing version for comparison. It does bring the trees and snowy shoreline a bit closer in view, but also emphasizes the empty sky (I would have liked more clouds that weren't so far off in the distance.)
