I often have mixed feelings about taking photos of the big ore boats often seen on Lake Superior. It's not uncommon to see a bunch of people taking photos when the boats are coming into harbor or leaving. For myself, I don't find the boats themselves that interesting to look at in detail. But with a shot like this, they are more part of an overall composition and I find I don't mind them as much. I think what I like most about this shot is that the large size of the boat conflicts a bit with the feeling of small and distant that the water has where it blends into the far distance. It feels like it makes the boat look even bigger than it actually is. I love images that play around a bit with expected scale and logic.
